Year of the Earth Pig

Ok, so we’re pretty excited about the 2019 year in the Gregorian Calendar. I mean, we’re already off to a good start as the U.N. General Assembly has officially recognized 2019 as the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements.  And I’d say we love the Periodic Table of the Chemical Elements as much as the next online domain name registrar, if not more. Probably more. I mean, heck, do not even get us started on the noble gases. We love the noble gases.

But, if we’re being honest, we’re way more excited for the Chinese New Year. It’s nothing against the common era, but the Chinese New Year is coming up and not only is it a weeklong festival of fireworks, dumplings, sticky rice balls, noodles, hot-pot, and more, this year it is extra special to us…

It’s the year of the pig!

I’ll talk more about what the Year of the Pig means exactly, but the Chinese New Year is recognized in China and around the world from February 5th – 19th this year (it moves year-to-year based on the lunar cycle), with related festivals at the beginning and end. But first let’s talk about what we’re going to do to recognize and start an auspicious year of the pig.

A huge sale and giveaways!

Stay tuned for a future blog post for the exact breakdown but from we’ll be offering steep sales starting on February 5th and lasting a whole week, until the 12th. The sale will cover many domain extensions, email hosting, and each day we’ll give away an $88 Amazon gift card.

Why $88? Because the number 8 is very auspicious in Chinese numerology. What’s better than one 8? Two 8’s. Why Amazon? Because it’s basically cash. Why social media? Because we don’t want you coming to our office as we have work to do.

It’ll be easy to take advantage of the sales, just buy stuff from us on the cheap!

To win a gift certificate, just entertain us @Porkbun or /Porkbun. We’ll be monitoring all our channels all day long and we will choose one winner based off our level of enjoyment of whatever interaction you send our way, with no promises to be scientific or fair. Make us laugh, make us cry, make it Chinese New Year themed, make Periodic Table jokes, whatever you think will make you stick out from the crowd! Puns are very popular here at the office, as are Game of Thrones, miniature animals, and limited-edition Oreo flavors.

Okay, so, Year of the Earth Pig.

Porkbun herself was actually born and released to the world in 2015, making her a goat in the Chinese zodiac. Porkgoat? Yikes, this is getting confusing fast.

But for obvious reasons, the year of the pig is special to us.

Our name is a fun nod to a traditional Chinese food, multiple team members and our founder are of Chinese descent, and our Porkbun mascot is a pig.

The pig is the final sign, the 12th sign, of the Chinese zodiac. Legend has it that the Jade Emperor said that the zodiac would be determined by the order in which the animals arrived to the first Chinese New Year party, and Pig was last. She overslept. We can really identify with that too.

Those born in the year of the pig are sociable, compassionate, and generous. They are materialistic to the extent that they work hard for material goods. They like to have fun. And yes, they are actually compatible with goats.

The last year of the Earth Pig was in 1959!

We’re excited to celebrate our first ever Chinese New Year with our customers. We’ll continue to grow and develop Porkbun into the best domain registrar experience during this auspicious year.
