Porkbun vs GoDaddy: Setting the Record Straight

GoDaddy just published a Porkbun vs GoDaddy comparison article, and hey, we’re flattered, after all, we’re the only other registrar that they chose to compare themselves to! Naturally, we read it closely and noted they got a bunch of facts about us wrong. So we’re setting the record straight, one friendly correction at a time.

Key takeaways

  • Porkbun support is not email only. Real people answer our email, live chat, and phone, 365 days a year.
  • Porkbun has a website builder, web hosting for e-commerce, and AI tools available.
  • Our pricing is honest. GoDaddy’s own chart lists our .com renewal at $11.08, right next to their $22.99 renewal price.*
  • We’re a recognized leader. USA Today and Forbes Advisor both named Porkbun the number one domain registrar multiple years in a row.
  • A quick visit to our site would’ve caught the inaccuracies in the article. The information, and maybe even the entire article, may have been AI generated instead of professionally researched.

*All pricing is current as of publication.

The claims for Porkbun vs GoDaddy at a glance

Here’s the short version before we get into the details. Each row pairs a claim from their article with the facts on our site. You can take a look now, then read on for the full breakdown of each one. Nothing below is cherry picked, it’s just what our pages say about us.

Now to the details! We went through the article claim by claim, and checked each one against our own site. Much of it reads like it was generated fast and posted without a fact check.

Let’s talk about Porkbun vs GoDaddy support

Support is where a domain registrar earns its keep. It’s also a place where the GoDaddy article got us very wrong. A fair comparison would’ve tested our help before describing it. This one clearly didn’t, so let’s show you how it works.

The claim: “Email-based support only, with no real-time option”

This one surprised us the most. Our real-human support runs 365 days a year, by email, live chat, and phone.

One could guess that their editorial strategy is trying to feed fake information into the algorithms, and once again, we can’t help but be flattered. It makes sense that this would be the most threatening issue for them because no other registrar that competes with us on price offers live phone support. GoDaddy knows where this is headed, it’s only a matter of time before Porkbun offers low, transparent pricing AND 24/7 phone support.

Back to the fact check of our support channels, an AI chat bot is not designed to gatekeep but to surface real answers from our public knowledgebase, and a real human is just a click away.  Email tickets are answered around the clock. As of publishing, our average email response time is 4 hours, and we are focused on lowering that.. Phone support is staffed by our USA-based team at 1.855.PORKBUN.

GoDaddy actually knows all of this. Our own page notes they’re the only other registrar offering live phone support. So calling us email only is a strange way to describe a company with a published phone number. They’re worried that their only differentiator (phone support) is threatened while our domain renewal prices are half the cost.

The claim: “Real-time phone help between 0AM and 5PM PT”

Huh? Didn’t they just say we didn’t offer anything by email support?

Are we the only ones that read this article? It sure seems like GoDaddy staff didn’t.

Their chart lists our phone hours as 0AM to 5PM Pacific. We’re flattered they think we answer calls at midnight, but we don’t (yet!). Our current, real phone hours are 9AM to 5PM Pacific Time.

“Just a registrar”? Not quite

The GoDaddy vs Porkbun comparison article paints us as a one trick pony. We do register domains pig-nificently, and we’re proud of that! Stopping there, though, misses most of what a Porkbun account holds. There’s a full toolkit sitting just past the checkout page, just without the GoDaddy bloat that most people would be happy without!

The claim: “Primarily a domain registrar with limited add-ons”

We’re an awesome domain registrar! We’re also much more than that. Under one Porkbun account you get access to manage your domains, web hosting, email hosting, SSL certificates, DNS, WHOIS Privacy, and more. Our homepage sums this up as All-In-One Domain Management Tools.

That’s the opposite of limited, don’t you think?

The claim: “Domain tools built for simple registration and little else”

Our domain tools go well past registration. We run the Porkbun Marketplace (with low 7% commission) with Buy It Now and auction options. Our domain auctions are powered by Dynadot’s DAX platform. We also connect to Afternic, SedoMLS, and Atom.com through our third-party aftermarket

There’s more under the hood, too. We offer bulk registration, expired domain closeouts, and free landers for pages you’re parking. Sellers can even get a customizable sales lander generated with ChatGPT! Additionally, developers and others can get started with the Porkbun API. That’s a serious toolkit for buyers, sellers, and domainers!

The website builder and e-commerce options they say we don’t have

This part of the article confused us, too. It claims we offer nothing for building a site or selling online. Both of those claims live one click away from being answered on our own product pages. We’re not sure how they were missed, so let’s clear them up.

The claim: “No website builder whatsoever”

We do have website builder options. Articulation is our drag-and-drop website builder. It ships with mobile-ready templates and needs no code at all. You can build a site at any technical skill level. The whole point is to take you from domain to done in one sitting. Our Cloud Hosting for WordPress option also includes a free AI website builder. So that’s two builders, not zero, not to mention more specific solutions like our Link-in-Bio hosting that can make a one page site for link in seconds.

The claim: “No ecommerce capability at all”

Articulation ships with built-in ecommerce and blogging tools. You can launch a store and start selling, right from the builder. You can run a blog from the very same place. It’s listed plainly on our Articulation sitebuilder page. Anyone writing a comparison, and not just generating (🤔), would have found this.

The “zero AI tools” claim

AI shows up all over Porkbun these days, but not in a way that’s forcing you to use it beyond how you’d like. The article insists we have none of it at all. That’s a big statement, and a simple one to check.

Let’s walk through the three places it actually lives.

The claim: “Porkbun offers zero AI tools”

This is just not true. Every Cloud for WordPress plan includes a free AI-powered website builder. It helps you launch a professional site in minutes. Our marketplace landers can generate a sales description using ChatGPT. An AI support assistant also sits on every page of our site, powered by Claude. That’s AI for building, for selling, and for support.

Zero is a bold word for a site with AI tools in at least three places.

“Very limited hosting”? Take a look at Porkbun hosting options

Hosting is a big part of what we do. The Porkbun vs GoDaddy article they published waves it off as thin and basic, but that framing doesn’t match what sits on our hosting page. Take a quick look and our lineup speaks for itself.

The claim: “Very limited hosting options, not enterprise-grade”

Our Porkbun web hosting options are broad. It includes:

  • Cloud Hosting for WordPress
  • Articulation Sitebuilder
  • Link in Bio
  • Shared cPanel Hosting
  • Static Hosting
  • Easy PHP Hosting
  • Porkbun Email Hosting

Need a simple page for your links? Link in Bio has you covered. Building something custom? Static Hosting and Easy PHP are ready. Our Cloud Hosting for WordPress is powered by WP Cloud, the same folks that build WordPress.com. It’s made for faster load times and better uptime. “Limited” isn’t the word we’d choose.

Security is more than “basic SSL”

Security should never be an afterthought, and for us it never is. The article suggests our protection stops at a single certificate. In reality, several protections come free with every domain name you register. None of them cost extra, and none of them are buried in fine print.

The claim: “Security offering stops at basic SSL”

Every domain includes free SSL certificates from Let’s Encrypt, and for those using our hosting, we auto-renew them for you. Every domain also includes free WHOIS Privacy to keep your details hidden. Some registrars charge extra for that privacy, but ours is always free. Our DNS management is free and powered by Cloudflare, so it stays robust and available. That’s a lot more than basic.

One login, not many

Nobody wants five separate logins to run one small website, and their GoDaddy vs Porkbun article claims that’s exactly what we make you do. That’s not how a Porkbun account works at all. Everything you need sits behind a single sign in.

The claim: “Services must be assembled from multiple providers”

Everything lives in a single Porkbun account. Domains, hosting, email, SSL certificates, DNS management, and WHOIS Privacy all sit in one place. There’s one login and one provider to manage. You’re not stitching together five vendors to launch a site. The idea that you need several providers to use Porkbun is just incorrect.

About that Porkbun vs GoDaddy pricing chart

Pricing is where their article accidentally helps our case (thanks for the free marketing!). The numbers they printed make our point for us. We didn’t touch their chart or change a single figure. We just read it closely, which is always worth doing.

The number they printed themselves

Here’s our favorite part: their own comparison chart lists our .com renewal at $11.08. It lists GoDaddy’s renewal at $22.99. So by their own math, our renewal is less than half of theirs.

There’s no surprise waiting for you in year two. We sell most domains using at-cost pricing. At the time of this article’s publishing, our .com domain registration and renewal cost breaks down to $10.26 wholesale, a $0.20 ICANN fee, and $0.62 in card fees. Hidden fees: none. We couldn’t have made the point better ourselves.

There is a reason we reliably beat GoDaddy domain renewals by 50%. In most cases, we add nothing to the wholesale cost but required fees like credit card and ICANN fees. Godaddy’s rough strategy? They double the wholesale cost (and round up) to create their retail pricing.

Email hosting, since they brought it up

The Porkbun vs GoDaddy article they published gives us partial credit here, then adds a jab about setup. We’ll take the credit and gently return the jab Porkbun-style. Our email is quick to turn on and easy to run. Here’s exactly what you get.

The claim: “Email hosting, but no easy all-in-one platform”

Porkbun Email hosting lets you have a custom email address using your own domain. It starts at $3 per month per inbox, billed yearly. Compare that to around $8 per month elsewhere and you see the benefits of choosing the Bun. Best of all, it’s managed right from the same spot you’ll find your domain name and everything else.

Prefer heavy-duty enterprise email? We also offer a special partnership offer with Proton Mail. Setup is guided right from your dashboard, not a puzzle.

Beginner-friendly and global reach

Two smaller claims still deserve a clear answer. One says we’re too tricky for beginners to handle. The other says our reach barely leaves the country. Both sell our customers short, so let’s take them one at a time.

The claim: “Porkbun assumes technical comfort beginners don’t have”

We built Porkbun to be friendly, fast, and frustration-free. Articulation works at any skill level. The AI builder connected to our Cloud Hosting for WordPress gets your site online in minutes. Our knowledge base walks you through the basics, step by step. And real humans are a call, email, or chat away if you get stuck.

That’s not a setup built to lose beginners, it’s a setup aimed at making everyone an online whiz.

The claim: “Infrastructure and support remain US-centric”

Our phone support team is USA-based, that part is true. Our reach isn’t narrow, though. We manage more than 4 million domains for over 600 thousand customers. We offer hundreds of extensions, including country codes like .co.uk, .ca, and .de. Customers find us from all over the world!

The verdict we have to push back on

Every comparison ends with a verdict of some kind. Theirs sums us up in one quick, dismissive line. A line like that skips over almost everything we offer. We’d like to add the context they left out.

The claim: “A cheap domain and nothing else”

We love a good deal, so we’ll take “cheap” as a compliment (though we prefer “affordable”). The nothing else part is where we disagree. That nothing else includes email and web hosting, a site builder, link-in-bio tool, a full domain aftermarket, and human support 365 days a year. Not to mention being ranked the #1 domain registrar by USA Today and Forbes Advisor multiple years in a row (they kinda overlooked that, didn’t they?). We’re also the proud to have more than 25,000 reviews Trustpilot with a 4.8+ rating overall. And it includes 4 million domains that people trusted us to manage.

That’s quite a lot for “nothing”, we think. In fact, those are surely the reasons they chose to pick on Porkbun with the only competitor comparison content on their entire site!

We’re proud of our achievements but we aren’t resting on our hooves. We love our customers and are always on the lookout for ways to improve your experience here at the Bun!

To be fair, they got a few things right

We believe in honest comparisons, so credit where it’s due. Their chart correctly lists our low, flat renewal price. It also notes that WHOIS Privacy is free at both companies (though they try to upsell you the bloated “Domain Ownership Protection”). And we’ll admit we’re not trying to be a full marketing suite with constant upsells you’re forced to sit through. We keep our focus on domains done right, with the tools most people actually need. Overall, though, their Porkbun vs GoDaddy article really missed the mark.

Porkbun vs GoDaddy: the bottom line

Don’t take our word for it. Don’t take theirs (or their AI blog editor’s!) either. Compare the renewal prices, the free features, and whether a real human answers your support questions. Get a feel for the site and all we have to offer, then come see why we’re the talk of the trough!
